About the event

The maritime industry is rapidly transitioning towards electrification. DC grids, electric and hybrid propulsion, and advanced energy management are becoming standard in modern vessel design, bringing both opportunities and new technical challenges.

To address these challenges, Van Meer and Alewijnse have joined forces to organise the Electric and Hybrid Marine Event, with contributions from ABB. During this event, industry experts share practical knowledge and real-world experience from marine and offshore projects.

Participants can choose two in-depth technical seminars, each focusing on key challenges and solutions in marine DC grids, energy management, protection, and drive technology.

Power quality requirements:
DC versus AC grids

Risks and mitigation solutions

DC grids are characterized by more complex forms of grid distortion compared to AC grids. Particularly in the high-frequency domain, DC currents can occur due to so-called common-mode effects. Higher switching frequencies in DC drives, incorrect grounding, and inadequate EMC measures can cause damage to both electrical and mechanical ship systems. In this presentation, Alewijnse will highlight these risks based on practical experience, supported by visual and audio examples. Measurement techniques to identify and analyze these phenomena will also be discussed.

DC grid design and modelling -Advantages of advanced calculation models

DC grid design with regard to short-circuit withstand capability and selectivity is extremely critical due to the required ultra-fast short-circuit disconnection times. During this presentation, Van Meer will address the challenges, basic engineering tools, and different types of protection for DC grids. The advantages and disadvantages of solid-state bus-tie breakers will also be discussed.

Energy management and hardware-in-the-loop design

Energy management is a broad concept. Market analysis shows a jungle of solutions emerging, but what does the end user actually need? Alewijnse presents its EMS roadmap and development trajectory, the detailed operation of the system, and its position within the ship’s automation architecture, viewed from the perspective of classification societies.

Innovative Switching and Protection Technologies for Efficient, Safe and Sustainable Marine Installations

Ruben and Jeroen are part of the Maritime Segment Team at ABB Electrification. In close collaboration with partners, they develop integrated solutions that contribute to greater efficiency, safety, and sustainability in marine applications. During this presentation, they will guide you through the latest developments in switching and protection technology for both AC and DC installations, demonstrating how ABB’s solutions address the challenges and opportunities within the maritime industry.
