Van Meer secures contract with Damen Shipyards for Drive Systems and Energy Storage System in Portuguese Navy’s Multi-purpose vessel

Van Meer has secured a contract with Damen Shipyards to supply advanced hybrid propulsion and energy storage systems for a new Multi-Purpose Vessel being developed for the Portuguese Navy. As Damen's preferred partner for drive systems and energy storage solutions, Van Meer will deliver a complete package of high-performance components, including transformers, rectifiers, inverters, battery modules, and battery converters. These components will be fully integrated into a drive system designed to meet the vessel's demanding electrical power requirements.

Under the contract, Van Meer will provide propulsion drive systems for both the main propulsion and the bow thruster, along with a Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) battery energy storage system. These systems are critical for ensuring optimal vessel performance, enhanced energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

Luc Van Meer, CEO of Van Meer, stated: “We are proud to add this order to our track record. Damen’s trust in our hybrid propulsion systems affirms the quality and innovation we strive for at Van Meer. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and supporting Damen in achieving innovative maritime solutions.”

Van Meer's advanced hybrid propulsion system, which includes drives exceeding 7 megawatts, will play a vital role in powering the vessel efficiently while minimizing environmental impact. The use of LTO-based battery modules enhances the vessel's safety and sustainability by reducing emissions and providing a reliable power source for extended missions at sea. LTO batteries are known for their thermal stability, long cycle life, and rapid charging/discharging capabilities, making them ideal for dynamic maritime operations.

The Multi-Purpose Vessel, developed by Damen based on the Portuguese Navy’s concept, is a versatile platform designed to handle a wide range of missions, including scientific research, search and rescue operations, environmental monitoring, and humanitarian assistance. The vessel can accommodate up to 200 personnel. Equipped with advanced technological systems, the vessel is designed to operate efficiently in diverse maritime environments while adhering to the highest standards of performance and safety.
